How we estimate tension

Tension here is an estimate, not a measurement. Each bar scores higher for tension (dominant) chords, for clashing intervals (semitones and tritones, after Plomp and Levelt's work on roughness), for being away from the home key, for borrowed chords, and for notes outside C major. Real listener data and style statistics come later.
